When the first settlers arrived, New Zealand was more than just a beautiful country, it was rich in natural resources. To these abundant resources and fertile land the settlers added agriculture and farming which now contribute to the economic wealth of our nation.

Renowned for sheep farming, New Zealanders are proud of their quality farming heritage. Unfortunately, during early spring each year, a small number of newly born lambs do not survive birth. These casualties of nature are processed in New Zealand to produce one of the world's softest and lightest double face leathers.

Some thirty years ago a group of Southland farmers saw an opportunity for processing these lambs which are known as Slinkskins in the tanning industry.

We have a nationwide network of collectors, who grade and collect slink lambs and calves from farm gates in their areas. Within hours, the skins are removed at strategically placed factories in both the North and South Islands. These semi-processed skins are then transported to our Tannery in Thornbury Southland for final processing.

Today Slinkskins Limited (A division of Hazlett & Sons) along with its associate companies, has gained the recognition as the world leader in the tanning of Babylamb, Deer, Possum, Calf, and Ostrich skins.
